Paul Rega M.D., FACEP Paul has been a practicing emergency physician for the past 20 years. He is board-certified in both Emergency Medicine and Pediatric Emergency Medicine. During that time, he has pursued varied interests in many fields, ranging from intraosseous infusion to acupuncture, from hyperbaric medicine to the history of medicine. Publications in a number of peer-reviewed journals have been the end-result of these pursuits. However, for more than 15 years, Paul has had an intense devotion to the theory and practice of Disaster Medicine. He founded the OH-1 DMAT in 1985 and established it with the National Disaster Medical System. Through the years, the Toledo-area Disaster Medical Assistance Team (TADMAT) has assisted the victims of Hurricane Andrew, Hurricane Marilyn, and the Mid-West Floods. It has deployed to special events such as the Atlanta Olympics and the NATO Celebration and pre-staged for Hurricane Floyd. Service in disasters was not sufficient for Paul and with two TADMAT members, Kelly Burkholder-Allen and Churton Budd, founded the TADMAT Center for Disaster Education and Research. Through this entity, disaster management research was developed and published and an educational curriculum was originated that has been promulgated throughout the region, across the nation, and overseas. For the past two to three years, Paul's interests have turned to another subset in Disaster Medicine-Terrorism and Weapons of Mass Destruction. This has led to Bioterrorism and from there to Bio-Terry ®. When free time rears its wonderful head, painting, writing ER fiction, vacationing overseas, and acting in Inherit the Wind have been continuous sources of nourishment and fresh ideas. Donald McConnaughy, B.A., N.R.E.M.T. Don has spent the majority of his career - over 35 years - in the arena of fire, rescue, and disaster management. He is a retired Chief of the Division of Fire for the City of Maumee, Ohio. Prior to this, Don served for 22 years as Chief of the Bureau of Paramedic and Emergency Medical Services in Maumee, a bureau he established in 1974. During that time, Don held the E.M.T.P. certification.
Always interested in rescue and fire education, Don has been a certified instructor of EMT classes, first aid and Basic Trauma Life Support and Ohio State Fire School courses. He has also taught EMS Disaster Management Courses on a national and international basis. As a member of the Affiliate Faculty at the Medical College of Ohio, he has also trained medical students in Advanced Cardiac Life Support.
For many years, local disaster preparedness has been of great interest and concern to Don and he took advantage of every opportunity to learn all he could about the subject. He has served on preparedness committees at Medical College of Ohio, Lucas County and University of Toledo. Don was recently appointed to the State of Ohio Emergency Response Committee, a committee of the Ohio Fire Chief's Association. This interest led him to join the Toledo DMAT team, which is part of the National Disaster Medical System. His several deployments with the team have allowed him to utilize the experience he has gained volunteering on a local critical incident stress debriefing team to full advantage.
Several years ago, Don joined Paul Rega, M.D. to develop MASCAP, a company devoted to the creation of educational tools and products that assist in training and on-the-scene disaster management. Later, the corporate mission expanded to include disaster management training seminars, which have been presented across the United States and abroad.
In his spare time Don enjoys photography, birding, amateur radio, collecting fire memorabilia and (especially) spending time with his four granddaughters and one grandson.
